DP&L COMPLETES SECOND PHASE OF GIS EXPANSION, MOVES FORWARD TO ADD PHASING INFORMATION

Wind Lake Solutions, Inc., (WLS), Mukwonago, Wisconsin, is pleased to announce that it has assisted The Dayton Power and Light Company (DP&L) with the completion of phase two of the utility’s GIS Expansion Project and has been awarded a contract for the next phase to add more information to DP&L’s GIS.

In early 2009, DP&L began migrating its distribution facilities records to an ESRI ArcGIS database. The migration was successful, but required further expansion, definition and the addition of attributes in the new GIS model. DP&L’s goal is to achieve the flexibility to adapt to future business needs with a state-of-the-art GIS dataset.

The second phase of this project was completed by WLS in concert with DP&L, and consisted of identifying and updating network topology, graphically reconfiguring and connecting fuses, switches, underground transformers and other devices, and assigning various feature attributes including facility ID, feeder (circuit) ID and voltage. The effort was completed through a combination of WLS-developed automated routines and interactive edits. In total, nearly 500 circuits were completed and approximately 100,000 GIS features were enhanced.

The next stage of the project, which was recently awarded to WLS, involves adding phasing information to the GIS. WLS also will be verifying model connectivity at overhead conductors and removing unneeded break points on the underground line segments.

“As we rely more heavily on automation tools such as the GIS model of our electric distribution system, it is important that we continue to improve the quality of our data,” said Jeff Teuscher, DP&L Operations Manager. “Wind Lake Solutions has been a key partner in moving us closer to that vision.”

David Coates, President of Wind Lake Solutions, said, “We’re delighted that DP&L has chosen to extend our partnership through the next stage of their GIS Expansion Project. As we’ve continued to work with DP&L’s GIS data, we’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand the fruits of our previous labors, so to speak. This has created a real sense of ownership of DP&L’s data within our staff.”
